Jack and Barbara Nicklaus enlist The PGA Tour and its partners to create Play Yellow for Children’s Hospitals to Raise $100 Million

Jack and Barbara Nicklaus have dedicated much of their lives to supporting children’s hospitals in Columbus, Ohio and South Florida and have now enlisted the The PGA Tour to help them extend their support to all Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

We are excited to announce the result of their work is Play Yellow for Children’s Hospitals – a fundraising initiative designed to engage the entire industry.

The Vision of Play Yellow for Children’s Hospitals

Both the Nicklaus’ and The PGA Tour wanted to create a campaign for the entire golf industry.  The long-term goal is for every golf organization, manufacturer, course, pro-shop, retailer, golf media, professional player, amateur player or fan to “Join Jack” and Play Yellow for children’s hospitals.  The goal of the campaign is raise $100 million in its first five years.

The vision is for “Play Yellow” to become a campaign similar to Product (red), Stand Up for Cancer or Red Nose Day for the golf industry.

Engaging the Golf Industry

The PGA Tour has reached out to all of their sponsors, marketing partners and media partners (more than 80 companies and organizations) to enlist their support.  In late-October, a letter from PGA Tour Commissioner, Jay Monahan, Jack and Barbara Nicklaus was sent out to each of these companies with a brief overview of Play Yellow and an ask for them to participate.

You can view the letter and the list of companies and organizations which received the letter here

A number of companies have responded positively and The PGA Tour and CMN Hospitals are working through the initial stages of their involvement.  As the conversations move past exploration and into formal participation we will engage the local hospital to participate and help in any meetings.

Play Yellow for Children’s Hospitals will Launch at The Players Championship – March 14-17, 2019

Jack, Barbara and Jay will host a media event at the 2019 Players Championship in Ponte Vedre, Florida to announce Play Yellow 2019.  The campaign window will run from mid-March through the Memorial at the end of May.

We expect to have a four key fundraising elements in place for Year One.

Golf Product Cause Marketing Efforts – The goal is to have 4-6 golf manufacturers support Play Yellow with product promotions. For example a golf ball manufacturer would donate $2 for every dozen yellow golf balls sold during the campaign.

So far, Titleist, Calllaway, and Srixon have expressed initial interest. We have no formal meetings scheduled yet.

Retail Fundraising – Ideally we would have 2-3 national golf retailers support Play Yellow by supporting product fundraising efforts and conducting in-store fundraising campaigns.  Other retail fundraising executions could include golf course operators and pro-shops.

So far, Dick’s Sporting Goods, PGA Superstore and Marriott Golf have expressed initial interest. We have no formal meetings scheduled yet.

Media Support – We expect to have 4-5 golf media partners support the campaign with content, stories, mentions and advertisements to drive viewers and fans to the Play Yellow web site and social media channels.

NBC Sports, Golf Channel, CBS Sports, Golf Digest and other media outlets have all agreed to support Play Yellow with on-air, digital and social promotion.

Fan-based & Social Media Fundraising – Play Yellow will engage 10-20 professional players, media personalities and organizations to motivate fans to donate or create online Play Yellow fundraising campaigns. We are partnering with Facebook to utilize their fundraising platform as the primary tool.  The goal is to create 5,000 fan-based fundraising campaigns during Play Yellow 2019.
